Information for Carers and Drivers

  1. Patients will be discharged from Dr Walters Vasectomy Centre only when Dr Walters and nursing staff are satisfied with their recovery and the criteria for discharge as set by International Accreditation Standards have been met.
  2. Due to the influence of intravenous sedation used during the procedure, the following can be expected:
    • The patient will be drowsy for several hours and must be supervised by a responsible adult for the remainder of the day and overnight, following the procedure.
    • The patient will most likely sleep for a few hours at home which allows the operative area to rest.
    • Short-term memory can be affected and the patient is unlikely to remember leaving the vasectomy centre or the drive home.
  3. Due to the above sedative influences the following criteria must be met for the purpose of safety:
    • The patient must be driven straight home from the vasectomy centre. Do not stop to do errands or shopping etc. on the way, even if the patient is agreeable to this. The patient is under the influence of sedation and is not in a fit state to make decisions of any kind.
    • Do not leave the patient unattended for the remainder of the day and overnight.
    • The patient is not to drive a motor vehicle, operate machinery or make important decisions for the remainder of the day.
    • The patient must have a quiet day/evening at home following the procedure. Visitors are not recommended.
