After the procedure

  1. Rest for two or three days, particularly the first 24 hours.
  2. Use an ice pack. Seal some ice in a leakproof plastic bag and place it over the operation site, outside the underpants 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, for 4 hours. Replace the ice as it melts. The ice pack helps reduce bruising, swelling and bleeding.
  3. Avoid running, unnecessary walking and all sport for 14 days.
  4. Paracetamol is a suitable painkiller if required.
  5. The wounds have been sprayed with an invisible plastic film which is a water and bacterial barrier. Dressings, if present, should be carefully removed on the second post-operative day. The dressing should only be replaced if the wound is moist. Use a Bandaid or clean dry gauze, obtained from a chemist.
  6. You may shower after 24 hours. Dry the area thoroughly after showering and do not use powder on the scrotum.
  7. Wear firm jockey-type underpants (NO boxer shorts) for support and to restrict scrotal movement.
  8. No swimming until the wounds have healed, due to the risk of wound infection from bacterial contamination.
  9. If you are unsure of anything post-operatively, please phone Dr Walters on +61 3 9887 8188.
  10. Remember - birth control methods must be continued until the sperm count is confirmed negative at 12 weeks post-operatively.
