The Procedure - Surgical Contraception

Although modern contraceptive methods afford a good measure of protection, there is no perfect contraceptive. This means that most couples, once they have the number of children they want, spend up to 20 years plagued by the prospect of an unplanned pregnancy if they have a contraceptive failure. This anxiety can jeopardise a normal happy relationship for years.

If a man and woman have completed their family, the fear of further pregnancy can be removed by a sterilising operation on the man called a vasectomy.

Vasectomy is an operation that renders a man infertile by creating a blockage to the delivery of sperm to the penis. It is the most efficient form of contraception currently available.

Vasectomy operations are performed on Thursdays and Fridays at Dr Walters Vasectomy Centre in Vermont South. The procedure is performed using intravenous sedation which induces a light sleep, requiring the patient to be driven home and supervised afterward.
